This paper is Jean Frazier and David Kennedy's contribution to The Balanced Mind Foundation's series, Translation of the Scientific Evolution of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder. Prevention Program Helps Teens Override a Gene Linked to Risky Behavior
A family-based prevention program designed to help adolescents avoid substance use and other risky behavior proved especially effective for a group of young teens with a genetic risk factor contributing toward such behavior, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), components of the National Institutes of Health, supported the study, which appears in the May/June issue of Child Development.

Life Stress, Genes, and Depression: Multiple Pathways Lead to Increased Risk and New Opportunities for Intervention
This article stresses the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in the development of clinical depression. Some individuals have a genetic tendency to place themselves in stressful experiences that activate their genetic predisposition to severe depression.Early life stress, such as neglect, abuse or early parental loss constitute major risk factors for depression. Neuro- biological abnormalities are also found to be important factors in this development.
