This article stresses the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in the development of clinical depression. Some individuals have a genetic tendency to place themselves in stressful experiences that activate their genetic predisposition to severe depression.Early life stress, such as neglect, abuse or early parental loss constitute major risk factors for depression. Neuro- biological abnormalities are also found to be important factors in this development.
