Pay It Forward as a The Balanced Mind Foundation Volunteer

THE OPPORTUNITY: Volunteering with The Balanced Mind Foundation's Family Response Team is a great way to make a difference for families impacted by mood disorders.  At the same time you can sharpen existing skills, learn new ones and expand your knowledge about mood disorders, treatments and interventions. Our mission is to help parents find the information, resources and support that they need to make the best decisions for their child’s care and treatment.

Graduation bpkids style: Hopeful Realism

Susan Resko, The Balanced Mind Foundation Executive Directorby Susan Resko, The Balanced Mind Foundation Executive Director

Late spring is a time of celebration for most parents with a graduating child. For The Balanced Mind Foundation parents, however, this can be a time of angst, sadness and even dread.  Transitions are a time when people reflect upon the milestones of the completed journey and look forward towards new pathways.

Harvard Student Shares Struggles with Depression (and Hope For Recovery)

Source: The Harvard Crimson

Harvard isn’t always the glossy ivy-covered utopia that many conceive it to be. "Brochure Harvard" does exist. But it is not always a place where conversations about mental health are necessarily encouraged. On a campus where the need for assistance is too often perceived as a flaw, the student body has a tendency to rely on variations of “I’m fine.”

Note from the Director: Pepsi Grant Update

by Susan Resko, The Balanced Mind Foundation Executive Director

The Power of One

This morning I had a wonderful surprise waiting on my laptop – overnight The Balanced Mind Foundation moved up from #10 to #9 in the Pepsi Refresh Contest.  An hour later I checked again and we’re at #8.  How did this happen?  Through each of you and the power of ONE.  Every ONE vote, every ONE email, every ONE person that you ask to help.  It’s the power of all of these ones that is making a difference and will help us to WIN.

Sophie’s Choice: Custody Relinquishment for Childhood Mental Health Treatment

Susan Resko, The Balanced Mind Foundation Executive Directorby Susan Resko, The Balanced Mind Foundation Executive Director

Perhaps you have seen The Balanced Mind Foundation mom, Lori Gertz in the Chicago Tribune and Good Morning America. She has bravely shared her tragic story about her need to relinquish guardianship of her seven-year-old daughter, Ellie, in order for Ellie to receive the 24/7 treatment she requires and, at the same time, keep her family safe.

As so many The Balanced Mind Foundation families know, some children with severe mental health needs are too ill to live in a traditional family setting. Residential treatment costs more than most American families earn in a year, and there is a severe shortage of treatment facilities that accept very young children. We know painfully well how a child’s psychiatric illness can tear apart the fabric of even the most loving families.
