The Balanced Mind Foundation Development Director
I’ve been involved with The Balanced Mind Foundation for more than eight years: first as a member of the Board of Directors, and as Development Director for the last two. I found The Balanced Mind Foundation for the same reason as most of you – I am the parent of a child with bipolar disorder.
My son, Gus, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age eleven, less than a year after my husband died from pancreatic cancer. Needless to say, our lives were turned upside down and the next several years were very tough. Gus’s symptoms grew worse and he ended up being hospitalized four times within a period of 2 ½ years.
Now, more than twelve years later, I often think of the challenges that my son has faced, as well as the challenges that lie in the future for him. Fortunately, Gus is doing very well and is hopeful about returning to college full-time in the near future. Now twenty-two, he has grown into a responsible, caring and personable young man. So, on balance, I am more grateful for what he’s achieved than worried about the unknown challenges that lie ahead.
T
he past twelve years have not been easy – I know that all of you understand this, oh so well. He’s been fortunate to have wonderful psychiatrists and therapists, as well as caring teachers, family and friends, who have all been part of his treatment team. I’m extremely grateful for the help which he’s received from all these wonderful people. However, I am especially grateful to The Balanced Mind Foundation, which was a crucial part of my treatment team.
The Balanced Mind Foundation was there for me when I really needed it – and is still here for thousands of families who need the support, information and resources which only The Balanced Mind Foundation provides.
