A Burden to Be Well: Sisters and Brothers of the Mentally Ill
Radio documentary

Produced by Karen Brown, Edited by Mary Beth Kirchner.

The devastating effects of mental illness have been well documented in films, books, and academia. But until recently, there's been little said about the sisters and brothers of the mentally ill. If, as many experts agree, one out of five Americans, or 40 million people, has a serious mental illness, their siblings must number at least twice that many. A body of research on what's called a "well-sibling" syndrome is starting to emerge -- along with a growing number of personal memoirs.

"A Burden to be Well" explores the issues facing "well" siblings of people with mental illness, through two intimate portraits of sibling pairs, as well as commentary from a range of experts and siblings.

The documentary, which first aired on the public radio station WFCR, in Amherst, MA, is now available for on-demand listening (at no charge) at http://www.wfcr.org/features/burden.php. Also on the Web site are three additional Web-exclusive interviews, a list of resources for families and siblings, and a recommended book list. You can also find out how to order CDs of the program.

This is a follow-up to Karen Brown's previous documentary, "The Wild Child: Coping with a Bipolar Youth." For more information, you can contact Karen at kbrown@wfcr.org.
