When Television and Hope Collide

From Law & Order SVU's Kathleen Stabler  to David Silver on the original Beverly Hills 90210 and Erin Silver (nicknamed "Silver") on the current 90210, TV has featured characters with bipolar disorder.  Do any of these characters offer hope that people with bipolar can live happy, productive, law-abiding lives?  Listen to find out.

Also, revealed are the results of 130 votes to the latest Flipswitch poll on Facebook, "Have you (or a loved one) ever been the victim of mental illness stigma?"

Just FYI: Actually, in later episodes (another season of ER), Abby's mother did stabilize. She came to help when Abby had her baby who was born premature and very sick and they really had a mom-daughter relationship for the first time. Therefore, it was pretty realistic in that it took years, but it finally happened.

I as well enjoyed your comments about how to help a friend with BP disorder. Keep up the Good Work! ;0)

I personally liked the analysis of the shows. It is great that they presented the characters recovered from their illness. While healing might not be possible, everybody has a chance for recovery.

I am verypleased to see that finally the myths regarding mood disorders are being unveiled.
This is very informative and also encouraging. We need to hear more testimonies of people living with BP and Depression who have learned to manage their illness and live successful, productive lives. I am a vivid example of that myself!
Keep up the good work!

Very educational. Thank you for presenting material in easy-to-understand language and format. Goes a long way in helping those of us who struggle to relate with people afflicted with mood disorders. Most times, we just do not know how to react and this somehow projects as being cold, indifferent, non-caring. At worst, people may simply choose to not get involved and thus miss an opportunity to serve and love those whom Jesus cares about and loves the most. Keep up the good work.

This was great! And although I am not a 20 something or teen with BP, I am a Mom with an 18 and a 15 year old daughter both with Bi Polar disorder! I too feel the stigma that they feel, within my own family and amongst my friends, they just do not understand... It would be great if it was seen on TV more even in the adult sector! There was a season on ER where Sally Filed played the mother of Nurse Abby. Sally Field was BiPolar and never around and portrayed like a scatter brained wanderer.. Nurse Abby had to take care of her, she never seem to get in touch with reality let alone take her meds and her character just sort of faded away! I was excited at first to see her and thought this is going to be great they can show her at her worst and then get her stabilized and transformed into the mother she always wanted to be, but unfortunately it never happened! I happen to have several people in my family that have BP and while they all experience their ups and downs they have been able to be successful in their lives, raise children and retire comfortably. The "new generation" in my family ie; my daughters have that positive example as do I!

Yes how can we be more involved in the creative process? I think it was well worth the discussion!

How can we be more involved in the "creative" process so that our community is more honestly profiled and depicted on TV, in the movies and even on this site?

Your analysis of the two shows and how they compare is great. I also think that the tools that you have for the Bipolar Survival Kit is great.
This is really nice work, thank you!
