Two semesters left to go in college. . .

It has been delayed, but not eliminated... Both my daughters after years of struggling with bipolar and schizoaffective are two semesters away from graduating. One is taking 5 classes this semester, and the other 4, and both are hanging in there with finals this coming week. It can happen!  Considering the severity of their illnesses, and the very poor prognoses for each, there wasn't much hope they would be where they are today.

The older dd had ultradian cycling and mixed states, while the other, with a childhood-onset schizophrenia spectrum disorder, lost much cognition at one point, and she retained residual hallucinations. But she persevered. One thing that helped her get to college was using a service dog (some would call her a "psychiatric service dog" but I don't.  A service dog is a service dog, is a service dog. Yes, the label may help when discussing type of training, but beyond that, each dog is specifically trained to tasks for the individual. They are medical, imo, and the ADA itself does not discriminate).

Yes, the illnesses have changed the course of their lives. Both are now in fields they would not have been. They have lost so much, but, as the saying goes, are working on making lemonade with the lemons life handed them.  As for the illnesses - "It's not Mental" but it does take a lot of  mental courage to survive them! For our children AND US!

Older dd: formerly(?) teen-onset bipolar: After over 13 years - finally STABLE off meds for nearly a year! Treated: Sleep, Candida, food sensitivities, nutritional needs, low-ish thyroid hormone. Now fine on just the diet changes and higher thyroid levels.
Younger dd: formerly(?) Childhood-onset schizoaffective, TS, OCD with disabling migraines since infancy. Also off antipsychotic and meds for migraines. Stable - no hallucinations. Treated for multiple endocrine problems, food sensitivities, nutritional/mitochondrial needs, gut issues, sleep issues.

That is awesome, and I love the idea of a service dog.  Our pets have always been therapeutic, even if they aren't specifically trained.  Thanks for sharing.
