Mom of son recently diagnosed.
I am a mother of two boys ages 6 and 4. I have been dealing with Bipolar personally my entire life and i am now 30. My son has recently been seen by a therapist in hopes of some help for him. The therapist agrees with our thoughts of bipolar. All the signs and symptoms point to it. My family and i are distressed every single day as there is very few days we dont have some sort of an episode from him. We are all at the ends of our ropes and have no ideas where to turn anymore. We are hoping strongly that the therapy will help. He will be seeing the psychiatrist for the first time on March 3rd and believe me its not coming fast enough. Therefore i have turned to the support groups and forums for just help and support and even some venting at times. I just need to know there are other people out there dealing with children like my son.

Welcome to the group. I responded to your other post as well. I encourage you to go to the "Learn" tab at the top of the page, then click on "Getting Started". You will find all sorts of basic information about diagnosing and treating BP in your child, as well as other issues in life related to living with an ill child.
Be sure to take care of yourself. It's similar to what they tell you on an airplane--if the cabin depressurizes, put the oxygen on yourself first, then put it on your child.

Thanks Brenda for this post and the other, Since joining i have scheduled myself a appointment with my Psychiatrist and therapist, Since i cant be seen by the psych for a month and a half, funny how you can never get in to be seen when you REALLy REALLY need it most, anyways, i seen my family doc, who put me on some meds to help until i can be seen. He wanted to start abilify and i was acctually all for starting that since i read really good things about it however, my ins. needs a prior auth forum that apprently takes 2 weeks to get through the system, and you have to have tried all other meds, which i am close to, they want me to try risperdal first, and will still be working on the paperwork to get the abilify approved. I am not too excited about this however as i have not read anything too good about this med. Especially weight gain, which i dont need anymore of, i quit smoking and WOW everything changed. Plus they are just doing Topamax, with risperdal. They want to see if that evens things out until i can be seen. I dont know. I will try it but still am hoping for abilify. Anyways. Just thought i would update you.

Good luck with the Risperdal. I'm so glad you've gotten an appt. for yourself. Topamax usually does decr. the appetite, just watch out for that cognitive dulling that it can cause.
