midnight kitchen raids...how common is this really & why??
Since DD had another kitchen raid last night...this time consuming a huge chunk of chocolate cake (about a 5in chunk!) plus last night's leftover popcorn....it made me wonder how common is this really in BP kids (or BP sufferers in general)? I've read on a few sites that craving sweets/sugar & carbs is a symptom some show. Does your LO?? What types of things do they crave?? Do they have the ''midnight raids''/sneaking/hoarding?? & does anyone know why????? Some of the things DD has consumed during nightly raids are cake, cookies, chips, fruit snacks/gummies, pb crackers, muffins, pb from the jar, various candy, & syrup (yes straight syrup from the bottle!)...she also prefers foods such as spaghetti, raviolli, mac&cheese, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, corn, waffles, & pizza/breadsticks. She literally could eat a pot of mashed potatoes if we'd let her (as is she typically eats 2-3 servings & we then tell her no more...which has led to screaming on her part before). She is far from overweight...actually at 6yrs old she is barely pushing 42lbs (she has went up&down from 36-42lbs for about 2yrs now) & she's about 3.6ft so she's on the tiny side. No real question, I guess, just curious since we're still in the dx process.

DD(7)-asthma, allergies (dust mite, tree pollen, severe cat/dog, animal dander, some metals)
DD(6)-ADHD, ADD, ODD, GAD, severe OCD, mild verbal apraxia, ''borderline'' ASD, possible BPD
DS(4)-preemie, chronic asthma, severe SPD, development/speech delays (almost caught up thanks to 2+ yrs of extensive therapy!)
My BF has BP and she "sleep eats". She will wake up in the morning to find the leftovers from her midnight adventures all over the house. She primarily goes for the sweets, cookies and cereal. She has found that she has made pancakes in her sleep before. Her family has found her in the closet saying she is looking for a bowl for her cereal. She has even woke up with cereal stuck in her hair. I went on a camping trip with her once and woke up to see her coming back to bed from the area of the snack bag. The next morning we discovered that the chocolate bars for the s'mores had been opened, the only problem is we never found the wrappers of the 2 missing chocolate bars. For her this is almost a nightly occurance.

Daughter - 18 - College freshman

Does your daughter remember the kitchen raids? If not it is possible that she is sleepwalking. Psychotropic medications (i.e. Zoloft and Cogentin), sleep medications (i.e. Ambien and Lunesta), other medications (i.e. Singlair) and alternative medications (i.e. melatonin) can cause sleepwalking. If the raids started after a medication change and she does not remember the raids you should speak with her pdoc about the possibility of a sleepwalking sx.

"Sleep Eating" is a real disorder. As Beth said, it can happen with Ambien and other meds, or it can just be a parasomnia. Also, many meds stimulate appetite, but most of these also cause wt. gain. It seems kind of odd that your dd could eat so much and stay so small. Has she been evaluated for any nutritional/GI issues?
But to answer your original question, yes, many people with BP crave sweets and carbs.

i have a 9 yr old son whio is ADHD and i know there is something else wrong we just dont know what. he steals food and it is almost always sweets, candy more often thatn anything else if he can find it, if not he will take muffins or cookies. could this really be a sign that he is also bipolar? he does seem to have mood swings but i thought it was just from the ADHD. his dr says the food issue is from him burning so much energy that his body is craving quick sugar or carbs for energy. i dont know how to deal with this anymore so i came here

concerned and trying my best
3mom99,
Welcome to TBMF! If you are concerned that your ds may have BP then I would encourage you to seek a neuro-psych evaluation. The doctor treating the ADHD should be able to order this. This testing would evaluate for ADHD, mood disorders, OCD, anxiety, ASD's and maybe some other stuff. It certainly can't hurt to have the evaluation done. You may also want to look in our CAM Forum for ideas about possible dietary intolerances leading to these sx.
