4 1/2 year old diagnosed yesterday with mood D/O NOS.

Hello, just wanted to introduce myself.  I'm a mother of two, a 2 1/2 year old son and a 4 1/2 year old daughter, who was diagnosed on 9/8/11 with mood D/O NOS.  The Dr. basically said she is bipolar , but did not want to label her as such yet.  She gets into trouble everyday at school and has been getting sent home from her montessori preschool lately.  She told her teacher that she has dreams when she's awake of people with blood all over them walking around.  She has been masterbating at school under her blanket at nap time.  She kicks off her shoes and throws them at her teacher.   She tells everyone at school that she hates them and wants to kill them.  She told one teacher that she was goin g to kill her babies. She simply will not accept the word 'no.'  My son is beginning to mimic her bahaviors although I do not believe that he has the same problem, just copying what his sister does.  They fight constantly.  She will not obey simple commands as 'put on your shoes' etc.  Everything is a fight.  The Dr. decided to put her on resperidone yesterday.  Does anyone know how long it takes to see results with this medication?  I just started a new job and can't leave everyday to go pick her up.  Right now my brother and a cousin have agreed to pick her up for me if needed, but this just can't go on forever.  I'm bipolar as well and so is her biological father and half of both of our family trees.  My heart breaks for her.  I know how hard it is.

Welcome to CABF.  I am so sorry to hear how ill your dd is.  Risperidone (Risperdal) is fairly fast acting.  You may find you need to go up on the dose, but it should help with the aggressiveness and other manic behavior.  She will probably also need a MS before too long.  Do you think she is hallucinating?  Her reports of "dreaming while she's awake" sounds suspicious for that.  What did the pdoc think?

Here are links to the Expert Treatment Guidelines and the AACAP Med Guide.  I recommend reviewing these in order to get an overview of the recommended treatment of BP in kids.  Also, I encourage you to go to the "Learn" tab at the top of the page and click on "Getting Started".  This is a good article to go over the basics of diagnosing, treating and educating a child with BP.

I am going to post this now as my internet keeps bleeping out on me!  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Oh, and you can also request to join a Support Group if you are interested.

Risperidone is fast acting, and we saw a big difference within a couple days even though it still needed to be increased.

My younger daughter had both hallucinations and had "dreams while awake."  Her mood disorder-now got changed to bipolar, then to psychotic-disorder-nos then to schizoaffective. We also have had lots of "mental" illness in the family tree.

Has your daughter had a sleep-deprived EEG?  And how is your daughter's sleep? If not OK, you may want to ask the doctor to have your child get a sleep study.

It's Not Mental

Younger dd: formerly(?) Childhood-onset schizoaffective, TS, OCD with disabling migraines since infancy. After over 15 years, is "recovered" for 4 years after treating endocrine issues, food sensitivities, gut issues, sleep issues, nutritional/mitochondrial needs.

Thank you both for answering.  Brenda, I appreciate for your welcome and suggestions.  I am not sure if she is hallucinating.  This is something she told her teacher and when I ask her about it she is somewhat vague.  I am assuming that she MAY be hallucinating.  To answer your question, Naomi no, she has not had an EEG at all.  She seems to sleep just fine except for the nightmares, which she doensn't wake us up for.  i don't think she wakes up for them either.  Thank you for answering my question.
