High Cholesterol
Hi everyone -
My daughter is taking Geodon (20mg twice a day) and Lexapro (10mg once a day). So far the Geodon has been great. Her pdoc said her blood test came back and her cholesterol is a little high probably due to the fact that I have high cholesterol and a side effect of Geodon can be high cholesterol. Her home counselor told us that a vitamin called L-Lysine can lower cholesterol. Does anyone have any experience with that vitamin? I will be calling her doctor today to ask if there are any negavtive interactions between L-Lysine and Geodon.
Thanks for any help!
Here is an article from Kids Health on high cholesterol in kids. It will tell you what level your child's cholesterol should be, and when it is a problem. Also includes lifestyle changes to help bring it down. Of course kids with family history of elevated cholesterol and/or early onset heart disease are at greater risk.
I looked up some articles on drug-induced high cholesterol, and nowhere were psychoactive drugs listed as common causes. Geodon 40mg/day is a very low dose. Is it possible your ds already had high cholesterol before starting these meds?
I found this article on the Mayo Clinic Website about non-drug alternative treatments for lowering cholesterol. It did not include l-lysine. As I was searching that supplement, I had a hard time finding any really trustworthy sources of information. Also, various sites claimed it either incr. cholesterol or lowered it.

Thank you so much for your research Brenda. I really appreciate it. We have had blood work done on her before when she was on Risperdal and when she was on Abilify and at those times there was no mention of her having high or even elevated cholesterol. Her cholesterol has only increased since she's been taking the Geodon.
Do you have copies of all that labwork? Sometimes docs will tell you labwork is "fine" when it may not be quite normal. I always get copies of labwork to keep in my kids' files.

Actually I have never thought about asking for copies. I will now.
Thanks so much!
You're welcome. It's always helpful to keep copies of labwork in a notebook. Then when you see doctors or go to the hospital they can see at a glance how your child's labs have been.
