Benadryl and wacky behavior

Last night I gave my son Benadryl because he has horrible allergies and was so congested that I thought he could get some relief from an allergy med. He was down-right zany after taking it. He was telling me that he could see germs and that he could see air coming through the pores of his skin. He was also very hyper and jumpy and silly. Is this typical? Any suggestions for what I can give him to relieve some of his allergy symptoms?

Thanks!

Kim

Both my boys have issues with Benadryl.  It makes them both extremely manic.  It could be possible that this is the reaction your son got and his mania induced a period of psychosis which is possible with hallucinations and all.  The next time his allergies are acting up it might be a good idea to ask his doc what else you could give him.  Charlie does better with Loratadine, but all children are different.  --

That is called a paradoxical reaction.  Benadryl is not really the safest med to use for allergies.  Claritin is pretty safe, but is not nearly as potent.  We have had good luck with Allegra, but it is by prescription only.  It is available in generic, also.  A and E both have taken it without any SE's.

I learned that giving benadryl to anyone that has add/adhd makes them hyper instead of tired and sleepy after I gave it to my son who has add.  I told  his pediatrician how he reacted and then he told me about this. I'm not sure if your son has been diagnosed with add/adhd but I know that benadryl does make my son hyper which suprised me cause I always heard that it puts people to sleep!
