anyone use natural appetite suppressants with success?

ds 17 has been off risperdal since march due to extreme weight gain (50lbs) and slight affect on liver...but aggression has become intolerable again.  raging  when told no etc...so because this is the only med used to curb his rages we are accepting that it is required for him to live a safe life.  i am struggling with it so much tho.  watching him gain the weight was awful then watching him lose the weight and get so excited about buying new clothes was a joy.  however, i have prayed about it and realize i need to accept this for his sake.  i will be food police once again.  question...anyone have success with natural appetite suppressants?  i know many are hoaxes but i have been reading all weekend...i am desperate!

I don't know about natural approaches but I've heard that Metformin works for some. I would think that dietary modificationS just like for diabetics would make sense (to whatever degree that is possible to control with our kids) such as low carb, minimal processed sugars, low glycemic index foods, higher fiber, etc.

I'm trying to figure out how to curb my son's weight gain too althoug it's not too bad yet but may become a problem. He's been on APs for a whole now but when he was also taking stimulants it wasn't a problem. Now that we've taken him off adderall he has started to gain.

we did try metformin but unfortunately did nothing.  i am not sure if risperdal itself put weight on or if his appetite actually increases.  he has been off it since march but still eats and eats alot.  and the fact that he lost the weight without a program makes me believe that the med will just put weight on no matter what.  i am so confused.  oh well i am just looking forward to fewer rages  i will deal with the weight issues later.

Not natural, but she was put on Topamax for something else (migraines) did curb the weight gain. The downside of the Topamax was cognitive dulling.

A "natural" that help curb the hunger was dietary changes. Greatly increasing protein, especially first thing in the morning. Eliminate refined carbohydrates -  no potatoes either.  Low carb. Only healthy fats.

I know from personal experience that Life Extension has some decent products to help control blood sugar levels which in turn can help control the hunger. Look into: http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Supplements/Item01694/Calorie-Control-Weight... and http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Supplements/Item01693/Calorie-Control-Weight...

You need to be very careful that meds and food supplements are not taken within a certain timeframe of these products as they may slow or hinder absorption. And of course, the disclaimer - always consult with a medical professional before trying a new product.

It's Not Mental
Older dd: formerly(?) teen-onset bipolar (morphed into ultradian cycling): "Recovered" after over 13 years - stable off psych meds almost two years. Now fine on just diet changes and higher thyroid levels (after healing - addressing gut issues/Candidal overgrowth while using EMPowerPlus and other supplements). She added a little EMpowerPlus back on as a multivitamin simply because she feels better on it - gets sick less often.
Younger dd: formerly(?) Childhood-onset schizoaffective, TS, OCD, anxiety, PTSD, migraines. After over 15 years, is now "recovered" for almost 5 years after treating endocrine issues, food sensitivities, gut issues, sleep issues, nutritional/mitochondrial needs.
