Anxiety Meds?
DS is doing fair taking 50 mg Trazedone, 100 mg Lamictal, 50 mg Thorazine, except for anxiety.
He has tried and failed on Clonodine (paradoxical reaction), Tenex (paradoxical reaction) Risperdal (tic & deep burning itch, high prolactin level), Zyprexa tabs (allergy), Abilify (internal restlessness/activation), Intuniv 4 mg (paradoxical reaction), Depakote (paradoxical reaction), Focalin XR (rages).
Pdoc is wanting to start a SNRI/SSRI and frankly, I'm worried about those. Are there any other meds that help with anxiety?
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Hey Kathy,
Seroquel and Gabitril are both good for anxiety and neither activate. Another option is BuSpar, which is a non-addictive med, unlike traditional benzos used to treat anxiety. Mr. 18 successfully took BuSpar. Within 2 weeks of treatment I began to see his anxiety lift, by week 4 it was completely gone. However, there have been parental reports of activation with BuSpar. Inositol, a supplement, is also good at treating anxiety.
I completely understand your hesitation with SNRI/SSRI's. Neurontin would also be a unlikely choice.
Hope "C" man gets some needed relief soon!
Hugs,

Hi, Kathy! For some reason, I was thinking you guys had already tried Seroquel. That would be my only suggestion based on our experience. The Seroquel isn't doing much for DS's aggression, but it has completely wiped out his anxiety. It's been amazing! Even when on both LIthium and an AP, separate trials of Celexa and Buspar made him manic within days. I was about to give up on the anxiety piece until he was older.
I hope you find something you feel comfortable with. I'd be very uneasy about the situation, too.

Klonopin is great for anxiety. Has been a great med for my son and other family members.

Thanks! - He has been on Seroquel and we don't want to try that just yet. Klonopin has been used as a prn but the pdoc will not prescribe it full-time.... I wish!
Jackie - Do you have any idea how much Inositol it would take? I think I have some.... that I have never given him.

Eric started on inositol over a year ago. We worked up to 8 GM twice a day. We were able to wean down his Seroquel dose to just 100mg at night. And his anxiety is under better control than it has ever been. He even stopped pulling his hair out (TTM). Our pdoc had never even heard of it, but she looked it up and gave us the go ahead to try it.

I think I finally figured out how to post (Whew) Grandson hospitalized for EXTREME anger at an excellent hospital in CA but Chief of psychiatry does not believe in childhood BP. The only thing they have added to his rages is Clonodine. He has been in hospital since Friday night and have had to give him 3 injections of Benadryl too. Will Clonodine help???

Payson 7 G-son BP, OCD Risperdal 0.5 (2X day) Trileptal 150 mg (2 x day)..Previously tried Prozac and Abilify and made him go through the roof. Current combo seems to be controlling (if possible) rages. Instead of 4 hours, down to 1 to 2 hours.
Hi Ceci and Welcome!
You may want to start a new post instead of replying to an existing one. It will probably help you get more answers.
Is there a teaching hospital there? Or better still, a teaching childrens' hospital? Even if the Chief doesn't believe in childhood bp, he should at least treat his symptoms. Clonodine is an older blood pressure medication that is used in our kiddos for sleep. Some pdocs will use it throughout the day also. It makes some kids drowsy so they don't rage. It made my son climb the walls.
The combo is certainly not working. The Risperdal, if not causing high prolactin levels, could be increased a bit. That helped my son. We haven't tried Trileptal but that dose looks low. Has he tried Abilify without Prozac?
I may try moving this post if I can figure it out - whew!
