Need help from GA moms with info on SSI and Medicaid
Hi everyone,
My husband and I are looking into apply for SSI in the state of GA for D (7, w/bipolar, mild asperger's). I would really appreciate some info from moms who have been there, done that! When the child goes on Medicaid, what changes about the providers? How do you know who they will be able to see? What about meds? Does medicaid make it difficult for getting meds? I have tons of questions before we start this process.....PLEASE help if you know anything about this!
Thanks so much!
Kim

Well, I don't live in Georgia, but notice that nobody else answered you yet. I do know about SSI because my son's received it for a few years based on his BP diagnosis (He did not have his PDD diagnosis when he qualified). I had a hard time keeping a job when he was unstable. He's been an "Equal opportunity rager" so that helped too because they were able to get reports from his school and daycares. I will try my best to answer any other questions you have about SSI. As for medicaid, sometimes certain providers won't be taking new medicaid patients. In MA most, but not all do accept it now-a-days. There are a couple ways to find out what docs children on medicaid are eligable to see. What I usually do is call the doc themselves and ask if they take medicaid and what plan (Here we have different HMOs that go along with Medicaid such as Network Health, Fallon, etc. but IDK if GA does too). You can also ask medicaid for a provider booklet. Sometimes they have websites, as they do here in MA, where we can look up participating doctors. As for medicaid and meds, the only problems I've run into is when there is a generic med and a name brand they make you get the generic. We also ran into an issue with trying to get my son on Intuniv instead of Tenex. They give him the generic Guanfacine, but refused to pay for the Intuniv after two prior authorizations. Besides those things, we have not had an issue. They pay for his very expensive Abilify and other meds each month. If you have any other questions I am happy to help. --
