Would this have played out differently if they did not have a gun in the house?

Of course it would have played out differently. The father may have been severely injured or killed. Maybe the mother could have knocked her son unconscious and maybe or maybe not caused brain damage. The mother maybe would have only lost some teeth or a kidney. Who knows, but of course it would have played out differently, but how, we'll never know. There are infinite variations of outcome, even if with the gun she managed to hit a leg, or somewhere less fatal, although I am sure she was just doing as she had trained to do when confronted with a life-threatening attacker.
It also would have played out differently as in perhaps not at all - had the son been able to have proper treatment in advance. So many families are desperate to get their adult child help but they are powerless. The son needed to be in a dual-diagnosis treatment facility - whether he wanted it or not.
