Darryl/Dad-WI

Hi Darryl, I saw on an older post somewhere that one of your kids attended Connections Academy and I wanted to ask about your experience there. My daughter (12) is begging me to enroll her there. At this time, I am against it. As it stands, I have a hard time just getting her to do two pages of homework; I worry that I will not be able to get her to focus on school work in this venue. I fear that this might just be a stepping stone to dropping out, essentially, and I want to find a way to get her to "go" to school. However, at this time, she is missing more days than she is attending. I know every kid responds differently to different things, but would you mind telling me your experience with Connections?

Thanks

Shelle,

my ds, Dyllan didnt go to Connections, but he did go to IQ Academy last year for the 5th grade.  From what i have read and received in the mail from Connections this year they are VERY similiar.... i liked it very much, he so much didnt but he wanted and still wants to go back to the public school that i took him out of due to his behavior... i was going to put him back in an online school this year also, but he was in the state hospital till mid Oct and 6th grade got full real fast, so we are currently homeschooling him, i would much rather be the parent then teacher and parent......

every week at IQ, he was given his assignment list, 4 days a week (Monday - Thurs) he had an online live class session with all the students and teacher going over what this weeks assignment in each subject...assignments had a due date, but they were not late for 2 weeks after that due date, but i made him finish them and hand them in on the due date to keep him in some kind of organization...at the end of some live sessions, the teacher let the kids webcam and chat and they got to know each other... now for the TAKS testing we had to sign up for our area and we had to take our children to that location to take the test, he could never finish any of them for the 5th grade, but they were so understanding to his disorder they contacted the state about his grades and his disability and explained that he did learn, but the testing is just too much for him and the state passed him.... if you have any more questions i will check back on here and answer is i can....

hope the info helped some...

Thanks Becky, your answers were helpful. It turns out though that if we did go that route, we would lose all funding from the school district. I've come so far with them that I do not want to let go of what we have. I'll keep it mind for high school if it seems more appropriate at that time.
