Gluten reaction-Need help ASAP!!!!
So when Brandon was on his basketball trip yesterday, he consumed a bag of potato chips containing barley. Today he is horrible. I am giving him extra aminos and choline, but is there anything else I can do?????

Antihistamine such as Benadryl if he is allowed that, unless he reacts badly to Benadryl. Possibly that AND Singulair (that's what I need - both an antihistamine and anti-leukotriene for the hives I get). If he has not yet had a bowel movement, you might want to try getting his bowels going. And for now, if you have some emergency psychiatric meds such as Xanax or lorazepam and the situation warrants it, consider that.

It's Not Mental
Older dd: formerly(?) teen-onset bipolar (morphed into ultradian cycling): "Recovered" after over 13 years - stable off psych meds almost two years. Now fine on just diet changes and higher thyroid levels (after healing - addressing gut issues/Candidal overgrowth while using EMPowerPlus and other supplements). She added a little EMpowerPlus back on as a multivitamin simply because she feels better on it - gets sick less often.
Younger dd: formerly(?) Childhood-onset schizoaffective, TS, OCD, anxiety, PTSD, migraines. After over 15 years, is now "recovered" for almost 5 years after treating endocrine issues, food sensitivities, gut issues, sleep issues, nutritional/mitochondrial needs.
I only have Risperdal. He cannot take beneadryl bc he gets psychotic. It is ALL behavioral. Just completely nasty

Some other antihistamine? I know we have to be careful because many of these meds have dairy fillers, including many forms of benadryl (we have to get the allergen-free Benadryl). Even Zyrtec has dairy in it. Most of my older daughter's reactions to gluten and dairy are mood/behavior as well. The antihistamine helps subdue the reaction regardless. Also, when she feels like she is going crazy, she likes to be reminded - this is the gluten, or this is the casein.... she is not really going crazy. She laughed about having antihistamines as her new "emergency meds" instead of the meds psych meds she used to have as "emergency meds."

I asked a friend that is also gluten intolerant and she said Alka Seltzer Gold and drink a ton of tonic water. So I am trying that and we will see. Hoping it works fast. Brandon does not tolerate antihistamines, aside from allegra, they all cause psychosis, which is why we suspect that his histamine is low.

Oh, sorry. So he reacts to all the antihistamines the way another family member reacts to benzodiazapines. :-( I'm curious - does he react that way to the anti-leukotriene (Singulair)? But if you never tried that on him, I don't blame you!
I have heard of the Alka-seltzer trick -- at that medical conference with Doris Rapp and completely forgot about it since we had never tried it!! It wasn't for Gluten per se, but it was for the type of reactions you are talking about!
Taking out my notes, here is exactly what she gave us pertaining to foods that quickly cause a behavioral reaction (after the fact that we should have antihistamines and asthma medication on hand if that's what has been needed in the past):
BUT she also said (in the random tips I took home from that Healing Young Brains Conference) to give 1/4 teaspoon of the baking soda in a glass of water. I think that was because of the taste.... which if we combine these two instructions together, it would mean drinking four cups of water each with 1/4 tsp baking soda).
I guess I need to check what she wrote in "Is This Your Child?" Unless someone else gets that info on here sooner!

I hope things are getting back to normal. When we blow the diet, it is 2-3 days to respolve. I hope it was a lesson learned.

Isn't baking soda the main ingredient in alka selter? So, I'm sure either would work. How's Brandon today??
Just discovered that cream of chicken soup has wheat flour in it. SHEESH!!!!! Is there anything out there without gluten? LOL

You make your own cream soup subs. I have to do it as well. Brandon is better today. Someone suggested that you can put baking soda in water and it will do the same thing as tonic and alka, but the tonic and alka worked, so I went with that, since I made an extra trip to get the stuff. Oh and gluten is in EVERYTHING. Most baking powders have it as well. Cosmetics, pads/tampons. The list is long.

I hope no one else on his basketball team knows he has gluten free cosmetics and tampons. :)

I am so laughing over here!! This may be TMI for the guys here, but the gals may be interested in checking out the Diva Cup. www.divacup.com instead of tampons/pads. It takes getting used to and you have to be okay with um....getting in there, so to speak. Just a thought :)
