Confused is this OCD or ADHD

Hi  I am trying to fighure out if my son has another illness to add to the BP. He gets a bit obsessive about getting things or wanting things. He can never have enough. For Christmas he got everything he wanted. Plus money. This is his favorite thing. However, now he feels he has to spend it on something even if he already said he got everything he wanted.

This happens quite often. He will want something and if we cannot afford it then he goes into a tantrum and says we are the worst parents etc.. I think you know where I am going with this.

He complains he is bored even if he just finish playing a video game for a couple of hours. It as though he needs to be constantly stimulated.

I don't know what is normal behavior anymore. My daughter was never like this.

Is always wanting more and more and more and more part of bipolar or another illness.

Willow - What a journey.

Son 10 yrs. BP on TrueHope Empower, Aminoes, Omegabrited, Pobiotics and Choline when necessary

After reading the "Obsessing" theread on the General Discussion forum, and from our own daughter's actions, it sounds like what your seeing may be a symptom related to general instability.  It may be time to reassess the supplements and diet.

Does the low dose lithium cause wieght gain?

Our daughter is on about 200 mg lithium/day, which is about 1/3 of a traditional theraputic dose.  I have been lead to understand that at this level, there is almost no side effects.

She has had weight gain from Risperidone from both times she was on it.  But now that we are tapering off the Risperidone, the weight is also diminishing.

Wow - This morning I was just talking with my older daughter about many psychologists labelling behaviors as "disorders." I wondered if the labelling is sometimes actually detrimental in that  the focus is then on the "disorder" and may actually cause it to persist. Many times, extreme behaviors and reactions are actually "normal" responses to extraordinary circumstances.  For example, most, if not all, caregivers of adults with brain problems experience several of these feelings: denial, grief, anger, brain fog, bargaining, wishing they or their loved one were dead, anxiety, withdrawal, etc.  Guess what? This is normal, but a psychologist would have a heyday labelling us. My older daughter talked about her Obsessive-Compulsive behaviors she used to have (my younger dd did too) that were severely interfering with her life. Rather than labelling them as a disorder, she is so appreciative her therapist simply told her it is her reaction to stress, and she needed to learn to cope better with the stress (this was while she was on medications -- before she got well).

I was thinking how terrible the outcome would have been if she had been labelled with "OCD" and then what? What usually happens is doctors look at the label as if it were a medical diagnosis and then would have wanted to medicate it.  That's what happened with my younger daughter's symptoms that got labeled "ADHD."

Some people really do have severe OCD. I am not denying that. I am just saying that OC behaviors can be a "normal" reaction to the feelings and stress possibly caused by... or is a part of... the underlying illness.

It's Not Mental
Older dd: formerly(?) teen-onset bipolar (morphed into ultradian cycling): "Recovered" after over 13 years - stable off psych meds almost two years. Now fine on just diet changes and higher thyroid levels (after healing - addressing gut issues/Candidal overgrowth while using EMPowerPlus and other supplements). She added a little EMpowerPlus back on as a multivitamin simply because she feels better on it - gets sick less often.
Younger dd: formerly(?) Childhood-onset schizoaffective, TS, OCD, anxiety, PTSD, migraines. After over 15 years, is now "recovered" for almost 5 years after treating endocrine issues, food sensitivities, gut issues, sleep issues, nutritional/mitochondrial needs.
