The Mom Thing: Worry?

The thing about bipolar disorder is that it lifelong. It may finally submit to treatment and be tamed  for years. It may stay docile or, more likely, it will come out of hiding and snap or bite at times. It may be dormant but it does not go away. This frightening fact hit me hard as my daughter, Linea, and I were working on our book. She had become extremely ill. She was suicidal. She was hospitalized. She had ECT. She was finally able to go back to school. End of story. Great, happy ending and one that I wanted to believe. I wanted to call it good and end it there.

Teens Disproportionately Affected by Mental Disorders

The percentage of youth suffering from a mental disorder is even greater than the most frequent major physical conditions in adolescence, including diabetes or asthma.

About 20 percent of youth in the U.S. are affected by at least one type of mental disorder during their lifetime to an extent that they have difficulty functioning, according to a new National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) survey.

Occasionally 'the Universe' provides a gift and reminds us to live in the moment. On a particularly horrible day I experienced a tap on the shoulder that literally brought me front and center into the present.

The teen brain is a marvel of smarts. It’s just not all filled in (yet).

Smart kids doing stupid things: It’s the teen brain paradox. Extraordinarily quick to learn and rapidly reaching fluency in abstract thought, teens still make bonehead decisions, perhaps more so when routines relax in summer. But that’s because they’re operating with brains that are still a work in progress.

What wouldn’t you do to save your child?

At a recent parent forum at my suburban high school, a drug counselor estimated that half of the students use drugs and alcohol at least occasionally, and half of those become frequent or daily, users. The next speaker was a young woman who spoke eloquently about beginning drug and alcohol use at 14, buying everything from marijuana to heroin in and around the high school, and leaving school at 18 with no diploma and no prospects. Miraculously, 3 years later, she is sober and picking up the pieces of her life.
